Things are rapidly changing in our town of South Kingstown, and I know that governing well takes the involvement of all kinds of people. Our Town Council needs people like us—those who live here full-time, work here, and raise families here—people willing to roll up their sleeves and keep South Kingstown moving forward.
Our families and neighbors deserve to have 21st-century schools, strong small businesses, and local leaders who love and understand this town. I’m proud to serve on the South Kingstown Town Council, working with my colleagues and our community to address the needs of our residents. I know that together, we can deliver for South Kingstown.
Born and raised in East Matunuck, I have deep roots in this community. From attending Matunuck Elementary and playing Little League at Tuckertown to volunteering as a firefighter in Snug Harbor, being confirmed at Peace Dale Congregational Church, and serving as a lifeguard at East Matunuck State Beach, I’ve always believed in doing my best and giving back to the place that raised me. We are stronger when we work together in a spirit of cooperation.
Over the past year on the Town Council, I’ve worked with my colleagues, staff, and residents to tackle big challenges while staying focused on the everyday needs that make this town special.
I remain committed to:
Serving on the Town Council has reaffirmed my belief that good government is personal. My hometown has given me so much, and giving back through public service is a privilege. I’ll continue to be an accessible and transparent councilmember, meeting regularly with residents across town and focusing on what matters most—our families, our neighborhoods, and our future.
Born and raised in East Matunuck, Jay G. Wegimont has dedicated his life to public service and community engagement. A lifelong South Kingstown resident and graduate of local schools, Jay grew up deeply involved in the community—volunteering as a firefighter, earning his Eagle Scout candidacy with Troop 44 Matunuck, and taking part in local athletics and youth programs.
Jay holds degrees from Iona College and the University of Delaware’s Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration, where he earned his Master of Public Administration (MPA). A public affairs and emergency communications professional, Jay brings extensive experience in government operations, crisis response, and community relations. His career includes serving as Deputy Communications Director for the Rhode Island House of Representatives, Public Information Officer for the Providence Public School District, and as a staff member for Congressman Eliot L. Engel.
In 2024, Jay was elected by the people of South Kingstown to serve on the South Kingstown Town Council, where he continues to focus on transparency, sustainability, and community connection.
Outside of public service, Jay is passionate about live music and the arts, often supporting local performances, theater, and cultural events throughout Rhode Island. He comes from a close-knit family — his brother, Matthew, is a registered nurse, and his parents, Mel and Butch Wegimont, instilled in him the values of hard work, compassion, and community service that continue to guide his life today.
